Devlog 2 - Prototyping week 2

Our second devlog.

This week we continued working on our prototypes and refining the ideas we have for the game. Here's some of the stuff we worked on:

Gameplay

This week we continued working on the mechanics for the players. We combined the two players in one project (which is available on our game page).

The engineer can now craft stuff, while the warriors can use weapons to slay enemies. The weapons have durability too, which means the engineer has to craft new weapons so the warrior can keep on fighting.

Art

We tested two toon shaders this week. We will aim for a combination of both in our actual game.

Light will be important in our game, so we looked at how the light can interact with the shaders.

We also found a water shader that would fit nicely for the style of our game.

Q&A

Last week we had some questions for our game, which we wanted to answer throughout this week. Here are some of our decisions.

- Will attacks slow the warrior down?
We decided that the warrior will slow down while attacking, but he won't completely stop.
- Which elements do we implement to make the gameplay truly cooperative?
The engineer has to craft the weapons for the warrior, and the warrior has to protect the engineer because he can't defend himself. We think it's really important that the game is truly cooperative so we will keep experimenting with this.
- Will the engineer be able to place stuff freely in the level?
Yes. It feels best to be able to place stuff wherever you want. Some items (for example planks used as a bridge) might need an exception and will have to automatically snap to the grid to avoid tricky situations.
- Which camera angle fits best for our game?
For our game we think it fits best to have a topdown camera view of the players and the environment.
