Devlog 9 - Polish week 1

Polish week 1.

We are now putting the final touches on the mechanics and art that we produced in the last few weeks. While there are no big changes happening anymore, the game is gradually nearing its finished state.

Gameplay

We added durability indicators now, which makes the process of breaking equipment less unpredictable. It is now possible to drop a weapon as well.

A lot of small improvements got implemented this week in order to optimize the gameplay. It is possible to cancel crafting, and the engineer holds keys on his back which gives him the ability to carry another item at the same time. Items have become easier to spot thanks to highlights, and recipe browsing has become more intuitive because it now remembers your last choices.

Some nice audiovisual updates as well! Lights got a flickering effect and sounds have become a lot more immersive now that they are being played in 3D space. The pause menu now has the resume button it was sorely lacking.

And above all of that, we made a lot of bug fixes!

Art

The artists worked on the level layout and details. We had learned a lot from previous playtesting sessions so it became clear where more or fewer items and enemies should be spawned.

A lot of VFX got an update, so we could finally throw out some of the standard Unity particle effects. We also added some updated animations and new decorations.  As you can see in the screenshot below, we added some light shafts to the start area, and created a LUT to make the scene's color palette more pleasing to the eye.

The UI for the start screen and the in-game HUD got an update as well, so it became more fitting for the rest of the UI of the game.

Now there's only one week of polish left, after which the game should be in a finished state. So be sure to keep an eye out for the devlog coming next week!
